The Clore Ballroom
THE MELTDOWN LINDY HOP
Saturday 11 June 2011

11 June 2011, 2:30pm

Termed as the grandfather of all jive dance forms, Lindy Hop was one of the great highs of jazz dance from the 1930s that spread to the UK and around the globe during and after the Second World War years.

An expressive and contagious, it brings the vibrancy and excitement of this original African-American jazz dance together with the beautiful beats, rhythms and sounds of jazz, swing and blues.

For Ray Davies' Meltdown, one of the UK's foremost Lindy Hop experts Temujin Gill has been invited to host a fun afternoon of social dance, including workshops, demonstrations and live music from Blue Harlem.

Workshops aimed at beginners (2.30pm) and intermediate-level (4pm) alternate with open dances and a performance by Temujin and his long-term associate Sunanda Biswas, culminating in a big social dance with the band. With other surprise guests, to be announced.

Temujin Gill trained at London Contemporary Dance School and, after four years with the Jiving Lindy Hoppers, formed his own company Temujin Dance. He is currently artist in residence at Greenwich Dance, working on a wide range of projects, commissions and events from rehearsing and developing new works to running adult Lindy Hop courses and directing large scale community programmes. His work draws on the vibrancy and innovations of original street dance cultures, from Jazz to Hip-Hop, to promote both their survival and evolution.
